Thanksgiving Decorating Hacks for Small Spaces

Want to create a charming Thanksgiving home without the stress? Enter a vignette! In simple terms, a vignette is a small, curated display that packs a big punch.

Vignette displays are ideal for any space, but especially small spaces because they don’t take up a lot of room. Vignettes can be placed on the floor, used on a table as a centerpiece, styled on a counter, and more!

And, even better, is that you can totally create a stylish display through the use of thrifted finds! Today, I’m sharing how I created a Thanksgiving vignette display using just five items that all came from the thrift store. Join me for this thrifty yet chic Thanksgiving decor idea on a budget!

Quick and Easy Thanksgiving Vignette with Thrifted Finds

Hello, guys!

I know many of us are feeling the pinch to get all the things ready for Thanksgiving. So, if you are in need of a decor idea that is super easy and stress-free, I got you! This DIY Thanksgiving vignette is budget-friendly using thrifted materials, or items you already have around the house, and can be made, from start to finish, in 10 minutes flat.

I’ll share my tips and tricks for sourcing decor as well as simple styling ideas on creating a Thanksgiving vignette. Follow along and learn how to create one for your own home! It’s sure to add a welcoming and cozy feel for all to enjoy. Let’s get into it!

1. Find a Crate or Basket.

First, you will need a wood crate. This will serve as the ‘thing’ that holds your vignette decor. If you don’t have a crate and/or don’t want to go looking for one, you could also opt to use a basket.

To make this vignette on a budget, I recently thrifted wooden crate for just $2.00! My tips for finding a vintage wooden crate in a pinch is to check your local thrift stores. You could also scour FB Marketplace for one that is local in your area.

2. Add a Large Pumpkin.

Now, we can start building the actual vignette.

Because I was building my vignette for the entry way landing, it was going to be placed on the floor. So, to easily by seen by others, I first turned the crate on it’s side.

Next, I added a large olive green velvet pumpkin on the left side. It’s a big, substantial decor item that packs a big punch in a small vignette such as this one.

Other large-scale items you could use include:

Then, to add a layer of texture on the bottom of the crate, I placed two burlap leaves to the right of the pumpkin. This step could be optional if you wanted to skip it altogether.

On the flip side, if you wanted a layer of texture there, other possible items can include:

3. Place Pillar Candles Inside.

Then, on top of the burlap leaves, I styled a set of three faux pillar candles with inlaid leaves. These candles were thrifted for just a few dollars!

With their cozy and inviting glow, candles add such warmth to any vignette.

Tip: I recommend sourcing candles that come with a remote. That way, 1) you can have them on a timer so, if you get busy and forget, they will go on automatically! And 2) You don’t have to go rummaging around in the finished vignette to find the power switches for the candles.

Also, feel free to use faux taper candles! If you have a set of brass or milk glass candle holders, those would look beautiful in a vignette like this, too!

4. Tie Ribbon Around Candles.

The last step is, for a bit more movement and depth, to tie ribbon around a few of the candles.

Again, I found this pretty lace ribbon at the thrift store for just .50 cents! I thought it would be the perfect accent for this vignette.

Keep in mind that this is your creation so it’s totally up to you how much ribbon you want to use!

I opted to tie ribbon around the two taller candles in the back. To do so, I simply measured the ribbon around the candle, cut to size, and knotted it at the top.

For a bit of differentiation, I tied one ribbon more towards the top of the candle and the other ribbon around the center.

Other ribbon styles you could use include:

Create a Cozy Thanksgiving Atmosphere with Thrifted and Budget Decor

With that, we have a finished Thanksgiving vignette!

I’ve said it so many times before and I’ll say it again…you truly don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on decor for your home, especially seasonal decor. To me, it just seems silly to buy new, expensive things when thrift stores hold just as good, and many times even better, decor options.

Through the use of thrifted items, as well as things I had around the house, I spent a total of $10 on this Thanksgiving display! Isn’t that SO cool?!

As I stated earlier, I placed my Thanksgiving vignette on the step in my entryway. But, the beauty about small vignettes such as this one is that they are contained inside something, making them easily moveable! Meaning, you can move it and display it in many rooms in your home without the fuss of taking it apart and putting it back together.

Other places you could style a Thanksgiving vignette include:

  • as a table centerpiece
  • on a mantel or hearth
  • on a kitchen or bathroom counter
  • as a focal point at a snack or drink station
  • on a coffee table
  • as front door decor
