Patio Decorating FAQ’s:

Before we jump in, I wanted to take a few minutes to answer some queries that are popular on the web. Sometimes, people just want a super quick answer to something, so that’s what I’m going to do here.

1. How to Dress Up a Boring Patio?

Have a concrete slab or your patio just feels drab?? No fear! It doesn’t take much to freshen up a patio.

My advice? Head to your local thrift store! Search for items such as outdoor rugs, planters or pots, throw pillows, or lanterns that can be used outside. For a super easy option, you can even opt to thrift faux plants to style inside your thrifted planters!

By simply adding a few pops of color and some greenery, you’ll be surprised how far that goes and for just a few dollars.

2. How to Make a Concrete Patio Cozy?

To soften the ‘hard edges’ of a concrete patio, and to create a cozier aesthetic, opt for soft things!

These can include:

3. How Can I Cover my Concrete Patio Cheaply?

There plenty of budget-friendly options for this question!

You could opt to paint/stencil the concrete or style it with an outdoor rug. Another neat option would be to find 2-3 outdoor rugs in different sizes and stack a few on top of each other for an eclectic vibe. Another cheap option is to make your own outdoor rug!

Your Backyard Oasis Awaits: Stunning Summer Outdoor Patio Decorating Ideas

Today’s post will be a bit different in how it’s laid out. This is because I’m doing a round up of sorts! I’ve written three patio decorating posts over the past few years so, rather than composing a whole new patio post again, I thought I would round them all up into one spot. I’m also including three other blogger’s ideas today, too, for all the patio, deck or porch inspiration.

Before we jump in, let’s take care of a few basics.

Creating a Comfortable and Inviting Area: Patio Furniture Decorating Ideas

I’m a firm believer in that a home is never actually finished. It’s a constant evolution of style, preference, layout, colors, textures, and so much more. Especially with an outdoor space, when it becomes an extension of your living area, there’s constant tweaking and modifying as the season wears on. But, rather than seeing it as a chore or something to constantly ‘figure out’, I’ve come to love the challenge of how to best work my patio into feeling like the rest of my home.

And, over the years, as I’ve practiced and played around with styling my outdoor patio space, I’ve learned a thing or two. Below are a few key points on how to go about approaching patio decor to keep it easy, fun, and on budget!

Patio Furniture Ideas

    • When considering outdoor furniture, some types of patio furniture suitable for summer and constant outdoor use include wicker, metal, wood, and resin. There are many plans online on how to build an outdoor couch out of wood, too, if that’s something you want to try!
    • To meet the needs of your family as well as any guests, consider a variety of seating options such as a couch, armchairs, benches, rockers, or loungers such as Adirondack chairs. Remember…for affordability, you can source these pieces secondhand from thrift shops or online marketplaces!
    • When purchasing outdoor furniture, be sure to keep comfort and durability top of mind. When it comes to outdoor furniture, I’ve found that it’s okay to spurge on a few quality items that will last for years rather than buying cheap stuff and having to re-buy the next year.

Outdoor Seating Arrangements

    • When arranging your patio furniture, try to place it all as to encourage conversation. Think of how an indoor living room is usually laid out and go from there.
    • There are going to be different layouts needed for different sized patios or decks. My advice is to play around with the furniture arrangements until you find one that works!
    • For ease of use for yourself and others, try incorporating ottomans, side tables, or a coffee table. The ottomans can double as extra seating while the tables offer functionality for eating, placing drinks, and storage.

Comfortable Patio Decor

    • Above all else, you want your patio, deck, or porch space to be as comfy as possible! Try using comfortable cushions and throw pillows, in weather-resistant fabrics, on couches and chairs.
    • My favorite item for adding coziness to a patio is a rug. This not only helps to define the space but it also adds softness underfoot.
    • Have a few outdoor blankets on hand to use for cooler evenings. I like to wrap a blanket around my legs to keep the mosquitoes off!
    • Another super comfy option (and that kids love) is to incorporate hammocks or swing chairs for ultimate relaxation.

Small Patio Decorating Ideas: Adding Style and Ambiance

Now that we’ve briefly chatted about outdoor furniture options, let’s talk a little bit about outdoor accessories.

Though not a necessity, patio accessories do bring in your own unique style and finish off an outdoor space, helping it all to feel cohesive. It’s like tying a large bow on it!

Summer Patio Lighting Ideas

    • Lighting casts such a magical glow, especially in the evening! There are various outdoor lighting options to choose from including string lights, lanterns, solar lights and candles.
    • For a united look, try choosing lighting that matches your furniture aesthetic or has colors that tie into your other decor.

Outdoor Rugs for Patios

    • The benefits of using outdoor rugs are exponential! Rugs help to ground the space, they add color and pattern, and protect the patio surface, just to name a few.
    • When choosing an outdoor rug, look for materials that are suitable for outdoor use such as jute, polypropylene and recycled materials.

Patio Decor with Plants

    • Plants and greenery are my very favorite for ‘zhuzhing’ up an outdoor space! Greenery, whether faux or real(I’ve used both), brings life and a fresh feel to a patio.
    • If opting for real, you’ll want to choose plants that are suitable for the lighting that you receive on your patio or deck. For example, my patio is mostly shaded, so I opt for ferns that I plant in both hanging pots and large planters.
    • When using plants as patio decor, be sure to spread them out evenly amongst your space so that each area has a plant. Try utilizing various sizes and shapes of planters for visual interest.

Shop Patio Pots and Planters

Outdoor Throw Pillows and Blankets

    • Throw pillows and blankets can add comfort, beautiful color, and textural pattern to patio furniture.
    • When sourcing pillows or blankets, be sure to choose weather-resistant fabrics that can withstand the outdoor elements.

Shop Outdoor Pillows

Summer Patio Color Schemes

    • As far as color schemes go for an outdoor space, I believe that anything goes! I tend to gravitate towards bright colors like yellow, coral, and blue. Other popular summer color palettes include  coastal blues, tropical greens, and neutral with pops of color(think bohemian).
    • Obviously we all like what we like and that’s apparent in the decor that we choose for our homes. My advice on choosing a color scheme for an outdoor space is to go with what complements your home and personal style. OR, on the flip side, a patio space is an amazing area to try something completely new that you’ve never done before!
