Why Vintage Pitchers? More Than Just a Vessel…
Besides the word ‘vintage’, I think my next favorite word(s) is ‘vintage pitcher’. These pretty old things are truly my all-time favorite decor pieces to hunt for at thrift shops and antique malls.
With the cutie handles and beautiful detailed edges, I cannot resist bringing all the pitchers home and adding them to my growing collection! I tend to stick to ironstone, milk glass, enamelware, or copper varieties of pitchers, but the following ideals for collecting vintage pitchers apply to any material.
Here are a handful of reasons as to why I collect vintage pitchers:
- Versatile in Form & Function
- Pitchers and its smaller counterpart, creamers, come in a wide range of sizes, shapes (from dainty creamers to large water pitchers), and materials, making them easily adaptable to any space.
- Pitchers have the ability to serve as decor even when not holding liquids or flowers!
- Adds Character & History
- Each and every vintage pitcher brings a unique story and a sense of timelessness to a home.
- They are character-rich and contain the most beautiful patina that simply cannot be found in mass-produced decor.
- Collections on a Budget
- Vintage pitchers are super affordable at thrift stores, antique malls, and estate sales, making them an easily accessible collection for anyone.
- Adaptable Decor
- They can fit into various decor styles including farmhouse, cottage, eclectic, or minimalist. This of course depends on their type and how they’re styled. We’ll get into this in more detail below.
Types of Pitchers to Thrift for Vintage Decor Collections
Truly, we all like, and gravitate, towards different things. But isn’t that so fun?! How boring the world would be if we all liked the exact same things.
When it comes to vintage pitchers, there a handful of styles and/or materials that I always keep an eye out for.
They include:
- ironstone
- Shenango china
- Buffalo china
- milk glass
- transferware patterns
- scalloped edges
- ornate handles

Simple Styling Tips for Thrifted and Vintage Pitchers
Over the years, I’ve experimented with decorating my pitchers and creamers in a variety of ways. I don’t really have a favorite way to style them because each time I use them in a vignette, my hutch, or seasonal display, that then becomes my favorite!
I’ve found that it’s all about the process and learning as you go. You have to start somewhere, right? The following tips are some methods of decorating that have been very helpful for me, and I hope that they can help you, too!
Vary Heights & Sizes
When styling pitchers especially, it’s important to group them at different heights. This helps to create visual interest and avoids a flat look.
To do so, I love to use vintage books or wooden risers (such as cheese boxes or small vintage pedestals) to add height where needed. Usually, I place larger pitchers on more substantial risers for a dramatic look and use small books or wood boxes for shorter pitchers.
Mix Textures & Materials
I used to have such a hard time mixing decor items together in a display. But, with lots of practice, I’ve learned that the more textures and materials, the merrier!
You see, when combining ironstone with brass (or copper), glass with ceramic, or smooth with ribbed textures, it adds a beautiful depth and interest to any vignette.
Also, pay attention to balancing soft and hard textures. You can use things such as vintage linens, ribbon, or faux florals to offset the hard surfaces. This invokes a romantic, whimsical feel.
Color Palettes & Cohesion
When styling pitchers into a display, I love to group same, or similar, ones together. For example, corral all ironstone pitchers together, all pottery together, or all milk glass together. This decorating ideal creates a stunning and cohesive display.
Alternatively, for a themed look, choose a color palette! This method will help tie varied pitchers together. As an example, I chose a blue, yellow, and white color scheme for my summer decor this year. So, I intentionally grabbed pitchers to use that paired nicely with that theme such as blue transferware, plain white ironstone, milk glass, and the like.
The Power of Odd Numbers
I’ve stated this before here on the blog but there is just something about an odd number of things that is so much more appealing than an even number! The design principle of grouping items in threes or fives, in my opinion, creates a more natural and eye-catching arrangement.
And, they don’t have to be three or five of the same thing…use two pitchers and one butter pat. Or one large pitcher and two creamers. Or a pitcher, a jar, and a flower frog. The sky is the limit and there aren’t any ‘wrong’ ways to do it!
Less is More
Some may differ with me on this last point, but, since I like a more minimal aesthetic, I would agree that less is more. Overcrowded anything makes me anxious, so I usually advise against it, especially when it comes to decorating.
Sometimes, a few thoughtfully placed pitchers or creamers makes a bigger statement than too many! To make a minimal display not feel flat, add in decorative accessories such as faux greenery stems, flower frogs, books, or themed art.
Vintage Decor Ideas: 9 Adorable Ways to Display a Vintage Pitcher Collection
Now that we’ve chatted about how to style vintage pitchers, let’s talk about where to display them.
Really, you can decorate with pitchers literally anywhere. One typically relates pitchers with kitchen decor, but I’m here to tell you that these old things can go far beyond that!
Currently, I have pitchers styled in my bathroom, on the mantel, and even in my bedroom inside of the curio cabinet. Wherever you think a pitcher would look pretty and add some whimsy to your space, I say go for it. You truly have nothing to lose!
Here are 9 simple and timeless places in a home to decorate with vintage pitchers:
1. Mantelpiece Magic
Ideas: A trio (or five) of graduated pitchers, a larger central pitcher flanked by smaller ones, or pitchers filled with seasonal faux stems. Also consider layering a mirror or art behind the pitcher display.
2. Shelf & Bookshelf Displays
Ideas: Intersperse pitchers among books, use them as bookends, or create small, personal vignettes on individual shelves. When styling shelving, it’s important to leave some negative space so that your eyes have somewhere to land for a moment.
3. Kitchen & Dining Room Charm
Ideas: Use them as functional displays for utensils, holding fresh herbs, hanging on a peg rack, line them up above cabinetry, or as part of a tablescape centerpiece. Another idea is to showcase a collection inside a glass-front hutch or cabinet.
4. Bedroom & Bathroom Retreats
Ideas: Utilize small pitchers to hold cotton swabs or toothbrushes, delicate pitchers as vanity or dresser decor, a single pitcher with a bloom on a nightstand, or as a decorative accent in an empty area.
5. Entryway & Console Tables
Ideas: Using a console table, bench, or entry shelf, style a welcoming display with pitchers to hold umbrellas, decorative branches, or mail.
6. Seasonal Styling
Neutral pitchers, such as ironstone or milk glass, make for the best year-round and seasonal decor. Here are a few ideas for each season:
-
- Spring: fresh flower bouquets, pastel colors, pink ribbon tied around a handle.
- Summer: colored florals, outdoor-inspired elements such as lemon stems or faux ferns, or yellow ribbon.
-
- Fall: faux wheat, dried grasses, warm tones, plaid ribbon.
- Winter: pine sprigs, fairy lights, pinecones.
Vintage Decor: Other Creative Uses for Pitchers and Creamers
Before we close, here are few other, unique ways for using pitchers or creamers. Again, when it comes to decorating with vintage decor, it’s all about getting creative. Think beyond the intended use….you’ll be amazed at what you come up with!
7. Fresh & Faux Florals/Greenery
Yes, I still love to use old pitchers for flowers and greenery! In fact, it’s the decorating method that I choose to use the most. But, my tip for this is, when styling pitchers with florals or stems, be sure to choose appropriate stems for different pitcher sizes and shapes.
My top two stem varieties are either stems that stand super tall out of the pitcher (I brace it with either a flower frog or stuff cloth napkins into the vessel), or stems that drape and spill over the sides.
8. Vintage Pitcher & Bowl Set
I come across pitcher and bowl (or basin) sets often at thrift stores and antique shops. There are truly dozens of ways to style these beautiful sets and, really, there isn’t a wrong way to do so.
Ideas: place on a dresser or nightstand for statement decor, a dining table centerpiece, front porch or patio decor with real ferns, garden decor, utensil holder, towel holder, or as a bird bath.
Here are more photos on this idea.
9. Empty as Art
A beautiful, patina-ed, old pitcher often needs nothing inside to make a statement, especially when part of a curated collection.
Vintage pitchers, especially large ones, could classify as art and look stunning sitting empty by itself. Alternately, style a collection of pitchers, but simply leave them as is with nothing else. The simplicity of it all is just incredible!

**Hey, guys. I have to tell you…I had such a hard time focusing on writing this blog post due to the devastating flooding in Texas. I mean…it’s hard to not think about anything else when literally hundreds of people have been lost. It’s just so sad and completely breaks my heart. If you would, can you just take a minute and send some prayers or positive love to that part of our country? They could really use it. Hug the ones you love a little tighter. I’ll also leave a few links to some resources where you can donate a few dollars if you can. Thanks, friends. Love you all.**
