Essential Elements for Summer Shelf Decor
When I decorate shelving throughout my home, there are always items that I turn to time and time again. But, depending on the season, I also love to change it up and reach for unique or interesting pieces to reflect my love of vintage.
Below is a list of summer shelf elements that I use regularly helps to add character and whimsy to any space.
1. Natural Elements
These elements, in my opinion, make or break a shelf display. Natural items, such as things from nature or their faux counterparts, add texture and movement to any shelf vignette that nothing else can! If you add only one accessory to shelf decor, let it be a natural item.
- Faux greenery stems or florals in summer colors such as yellow, white, or blue. Favorite varieties include wildflowers, poppy, ranunculus, and sunflowers.
- Coastal Finds: neutral accents that can be used in any shelf theme display such as seashells, driftwood, or smooth stones.
- Whispy grasses
2. Vintage Textiles
Vintage linens bring softness to a vignette and act as an anchor for decor to sit on top of. By using a vintage linen as a base for any shelf display, the decor will feel much more cohesive and well-rounded…the textile makes the decor feel like it’s not just floating, if you know what I mean.
- Hankies
- Table runners
- Doilies
- Old fabric scraps or linen
3. Vintage Glassware
You probably know my deep love for vintage glass, especially milk glass. Vintage glassware brings a timeless elegance to a space while adding whimsy and character. They are usually the perfect sizes for filling in empty gaps, too!
-
Vases in whites, creams, and light or aqua blues
-
Unique glass bottles
- Milk glass in timeless patterns such as hobnail
4. Textural Accents
These items, usually made of wood or a wood-like material, bring a sense of grounded-ness to any shelf. They help retain a sense of the natural world inside of a shelf vignette.
- Woven baskets
- Rattan trays
- Wooden accents such as risers or small boxes
5. Books & Art
Vintage books and art are another one of those items that really amp up the story-telling narrative of a shelf display. Every person sees art in a different way so, by incorporating it onto a shelf, each individual will take something special and unique away from what you’ve created. Isn’t that so neat?!
- Books with light-colored spines (blues, greens, yellows) or summer-themed covers
- Framed prints of landscapes or botanicals
- Mirrors
6. Vintage Decor Accessories
Cue my favorite part of any shelf display…vintage accessories! These small items help to fill out the vignette and fill in any empty spaces with ease and personality. I like to think of vintage accessories as co-stars of the shelf. Without them, you wouldn’t have a well-rounded, scenic display!
- Enamelware
- Thread spools
- Misters or spritzers
- Creamers
- Vintage dishes
- Flower frogs
- Butter pats
7. Zesty Lemon Decor Accents
Since the shelf decor that we’re chatting about is lemon-themed, it’s pertinent that this decor is included here, too! I truly love the cheery and bright yellow lemons throughout my living room shelf decor. They really do add a dose of happiness to this crazy world we are living in right now.
And, it really is a simple task to place the lemon-themed accents throughout…I suggest purchasing your lemon decor ahead of time so you know what you have and then start decorating. Thrift stores are a great place to look for themed decor!
- Faux lemons/lemon branches.
- Lemon-themed art prints or botanical illustrations.
- Ceramic lemon figurines.
- Yellow/citrus-toned vases or accents to complement the lemons.

Now that we chatted about the types of shelf decor to utilize, let’s move on to how to put it all together.
Hopefully these tips will come in handy for you!
Anchor Each End
The first tip is to make sure to anchor each end of the shelf. By this I mean to use two similarly-sized, larger decor items to act almost like bookends. Some ideas for end of shelf decor include large glass jugs, tall bottles, baskets, or over-sized vases.
It doesn’t matter if you are styling a wall shelf, a bookshelf, or something else; those anchors will work in your favor…I promise! If you don’t have anything readily available, head to your local thrift store. There is always an abundance of large-scale decor items for super cheap.
The Power of Edit
You guys. If you only take away one thing from this post let it be this…there is nothing wrong with editing a shelf display! Edit as much as you want…take things out, try something else, put something in a different place, etc…
And, it’s also so important to create breathing room.
I always encourage others to style a shelf in the way that they want but then take a few things out. Why? Well, because a cluttered shelf isn’t pleasing to look at. And, truly, ‘clutter’ or ‘clutter-free’ looks different to each person so take this with grain of salt but, decluttering a shelf to make way for a little more negative space, is just as pleasing.
Vary Heights & Depths
To create a visually-interesting look across a shelf, it’s important to use objects of varying heights and sizes. Think tall vases, medium-sized books or bowls, and small vintage trinkets.
When I style a shelf, I always layer from back to front. Start with the larger pieces in back, add in the medium decor in the middle, and fill in the front with low-lying objects.
Grouping in Odd Numbers (Creating Vignettes Within the Whole)
I’ve talked about this many times here on the blog before, but an odd number of items grouped together is much more pleasing than an even number.
So, when styling shelving, you are basically creating smaller, pleasing vignette clusters of three or five pieces within the whole one.
Examples:
- a creamer, medium pitcher, and tall jar
- two butter pats and a vintage spritzer
- two stacked cups and a large book
Color Palette Cohesion
When decorating shelving, it’s helpful to have a cohesive color palette throughout. This allows for a unified look across the shelf, and, really, throughout your entire home, as well.
For my summer shelf decor, I chose to use yellow, white, and blue as the main colors. So, to keep my home feeling united, I used the same colors on every shelf in my space.
Lemon decor specifically naturally brightens a space so there is no need to go all out with colors. Lemons pair beautifully with muted blues, greens, whites, and natural wood tones. It can be super chic and high-end when done correctly!
Other popular summer decor color palettes include:
- coastal blues and whites
- citrus tones
- muted greens
- neutrals such as cream, wood tones, and grey
